Dare County, North Carolina that is.

These are the adventures of the Sutherland family. We have moved from the northeast coast of North Carolina (Dare County) to the southwest coast of India...from Nags Head to Thiruvananthapuram. If you can't say that, then Trivandrum works, too.

From the Rooftop

On a clear day, we can see the Western Ghats from our flat.  Cora likes to go up to the roof, where we can see the mountains and the whole city.

Onam

Onam is a holiday with Hindu roots that pretty much has become a harvest festival.  Prosperity seems to be the theme.  Today, there's no religious lines regarding Onam, and it is enjoyed by everyone throughout the state of Kerela.  It goes on for 10 days or so, and stores shut down rather randomly throughout those 10 days.  So, stock up.

Near our flat is the hub for festivities in our city.  Cora braved some amusement park rides.  If the spinning doesn't get you noxious, the gas (we say petrol here) fumes will.

Some views from our "flat."

Same Same Only Different

That's what they say in India.  The different part sure hits you at first, but after 6 weeks or so, everything is starting to feel surprisingly normal.  We've had a few cries and countless laughs.  Topping the list was the explosion of Cora's toilet.  The water heater mounted on the wall above it decided to hop off all on its own.  Thankfully, nobody was in the bathroom.  Ceramic toilet chunks were blown everywhere.  Cora was reading on her bed as the pieces were shot into her room.  The ripped hoses were spraying water in every direction.
